God’s Top 20 1.2 Timothy 3:16—All scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: The Bible flows like a river from Genesis to Revelation and this verse tells us all scripture is important. We can not leave out or change any part of God’s word. We can not pick and choose what scripture we believe. The sacrifice Jesus made on the cross only did away with the Old Testament sacrificial system; everything else remains the guide for our lives. The following verses are just the very tip of knowing God and how we may enjoy a relationship with Him.
2. Genesis 1:1,27 In the beginning God created the heaven and earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Before we can ever have a relationship with God we must acknowledge He is the Creator. It was God who created all things, including man. If we do not have this firmly committed to our heart and mind it is useless for us to continue.
3. Psalms 14:1 The fool has said in his heart there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The Bible says only a fool would deny there is a God. Before we can know God for who He is, we must admit He is real and we need Him.
4. Romans 5:12-15 Wherefore, by one man sin entered in the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. Because Adam and Eve sinned all of us now have a sin nature. Because of the obedience of Jesus and his sinless life, we can be made righteous. God’s law shows us we are sinners because of our inability to keep the law. It also shows us how much grace God gave us through Jesus. Exodus Chapter 20 and Deuteronomy Chapter 4 list the commandments God gave Moses. Can anyone look at this list and stand before God and say they have never broken one of the laws in even the smallest of ways? If we have broken just one part we are in need of a savior.
5. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. All of us have sinned and fallen short of heaven. We must recognize that unless we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior we will be guilty of sin under the law.
6. Judges 17:6 In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. If we claim that he is our savior, then we must do what is right in His eyes. Since the days of Adam and Eve, people have always wanted to do what they thought was right. God has always tried to instruct us in the way we should go to avoid, not only problems in this life, but to assure us of where we will spend eternity.
7. Hebrews 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Following God will lead to blessings and eternal life. Those that choose not to follow will find it is a fearful thing to face the one God of the universe when there is no hope of being forgiven. One must choose Jesus in this life. We cannot wait until our time is up.
8. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. When Adam and Eve sinned, He promised He would provide a way of salvation. God would robe Himself in a fleshly body and provide a sacrifice for all. The one God would do what no man could do. For those that believe in Him, He will be all the things mentioned in this passage.
9. Matthew 1:21-23 And she shalt bring forth a son, and thou shall call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. In these verses, the prophecy from Isaiah is fulfilled in the person of Jesus. His sacrifice would save all from their sins. He was, as the scripture says, God with us. As God, He had the power to heal and perform miracles but it was as a human man that had committed no sin that He provided a sacrifice for all.
10. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Jesus, God’s Son, would bring life to those who believe in and follow Him. Because of God’s love for His creation, He fulfilled His promise of redemption to those who would return to Him. His was the ultimate sacrifice.
11. Philippians 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Everyone will bow at the name of Jesus. The only question is whether we will call Him Lord and Savior or Judge.12. Acts 4:10-12 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. We must believe that Jesus died for our sins and that He rose again. After that we have only to follow the salvation plan spoken by Jesus and preached by Peter and other Disciples. Some people may say it is intolerant and unloving to say Jesus is the only way of salvation, but love is being truthful and there is no greater truth than God’s word.
13. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. The very first message to the New Testament church was believe in Jesus, repent, be baptized in Jesus name and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Peter followed what Jesus said in John Chapter 3. This was repeated over and over in the New Testament Acts Chapter 8,10,19, Titus 3:5 are a few examples. We must always remember Statement number 1 when we are reading God’s word.
14. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. When we follow God’s plan of salvation, we are a new creation; all of our sin is washed away and God sees us as a new person.
15. Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Jesus says we cannot love Him and walk in a way He does not agree with. He did not save us to have us return to the same mess He saved us from. We cannot make up our own rules and do things our way no matter how sincere we think we are. It must be Jesus 100% or nothing.
16. 1 John 2:14-16 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. John tells us if we really love Jesus with our whole heart we should not love or do the things that are against God’s nature. Our God is a Holy God and if we are to follow Him we must walk and do what He would want us to do. Should we fail 1 John 2:1 tells us to go to Jesus in repentance and He will forgive us.
17. Mark 12:28-31 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. 1. Jesus tells us the two most important things in life: There is One God and we should love Him with all we have. When we go through our everyday life that love should be seen in a way that is in obedience to how God says we should live. 2. We should extend God’s love to those we meet. Should we choose to live our way 1 John 2:4 explains where and who we are.
18. 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. This verse explains why people reject not only Jesus but what the word of God says. Jesus, who is the image of God, died for all and His light of salvation will shine to all those that will accept it.
19. Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. We must have faith in who Jesus is, what He did and what He said. If we seek the truth with an open heart and an open mind, we will find it if we have faith in God.
20. Revelation 21:1-4 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be now more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. For those that follow God’s plan and endure to the end their reward shall be what is stated in these verses. They will be forever in the presence of God with no death, pain or sorrow. Jesus never said it would be easy or that many would listen. He offered a way, the only way, to eternal life.
